Newlyn School of Art's Canopy Exhibition Draws Artists from across the UK and even Asia
Graduating from A Year of Mentoring at Newlyn School of Art
I moved to Cornwall in May 2016 and am thrilled to have been accepted onto the One Year Artist Mentoring course at Newlyn School of Art near Penzance in Cornwall, UK.
Now in its fourth year, the course is aimed at enabling students to develop their artistic practice over a year of one-to-one tutorials and mentoring under the guidance of a host of well known artists including tutors Jesse Leroy Smith, Gareth Edwards, Faye Dobinson, Sam Bassett, Kate Walters, Lucy Willow, Jason Walker, Jessica Cooper, and Mark Surridge.
We meet every two months for a weekend of intense discussions, artist talks, studio visits, tutorials and peer critiques and talks from specialists from Tate, Newlyn Art Gallery and Arts Council England.
My work has developed in new and exciting ways —including at scale, as I allowed myself to explore my love of colour and the effects that immersive colour frequency has on the body.
There's also the opportunity to show our work at well known local venues and galleries including Chapel House in Penzance, Tremenheere gallery and at PZ Gallery for the year end graduate show —a group exhibition titled Canopy.
Canopy is a dynamic and immersive exhibition of experimental and challenging multi-media artworks by 16 artists who are completing Newyln School of Art's 2016 Artist Mentoring Course. The show runs from 10am - 6pm on Friday 25 November, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November and is held at Penzance's iconic PZ Gallery, a former car showroom, at 7 Coinegehall Street, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 4AY. Throughout the weekend all the artists and tutors will be discussing the artworks at the gallery and visitors are welcome to come any time and listen in. The opening evening is from 6-10pm on Friday 25 November and all are welcome.
“This will be a great social occasion with the host of artists and course tutors who are will be in attendance as well as a host of course tutors from Cornwall’s leading artists including Gareth Edwards, Sam Bassett, Matt Benington, Rachel Reeves, Jessica Cooper, Kate Walters and Faye Dobinson,” said Jesse Leroy Smith, course lead tutor. "Canopy will be very visual event with projections on the facade of the building, a vandalised car, large free-hanging paintings and intimate drawings.”
The Director of Newlyn School of Art, Henry Garfit, will also be present. “Now in its fourth year, the One Year Artist Mentoring Course is a singularly powerful, fascinating and positive experience made real by those who take part in it,” said Garfit. “This year, the course has drawn artists close to launching themselves professionally from around the country and as far afield as Manchester and even Taiwan.”
"The Canopy exhibition reveals something of the unity the 2016 group has experienced over the course through their shared desire to understand how their work fits into the world around them and how they can most clearly communicate their artistic vision to others.”
Works are for sale and a raffle of 16 original artworks by each of the sixteen artists will be held from 8 - 9 pm on Friday 25th November. The exhibition runs from 25 - 27 November and is open from 10 - 6pm each day. Tickets are available in advance from www.newlynartschool.co.uk.

Canopy art show is the year-end show of the 2016 Artist Mentoring Course at Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall, UK
Held at Newlyn School of Art over six weekends, each two months apart, the One Year Artist Mentoring Course offers artists an experience of a year of guidance from many of Cornwall’s leading artists providing mentoring, one-to-one group tutorials and professional development. Work is created between sessions and brought in for the weekends to gain guidance from the artists who teach on the course and to share their work in the supportive and constructive environment of the group. At times on each weekend there are up to six artists teaching the sixteen participants at the same time, giving an amazingly high ratio of contemporary artist tutors to students.
Newlyn School of Art is a dynamic and innovative art school situated in the heart of the famous artistic colony of Newlyn in Cornwall a few hundred yards from where the Forbes School of Painting was run by Stanhope Forbes, the 'Father' of the Newlyn School of Painters, between 1899 and 1938.
