Frequently Asked Questions

original Paintings

  • I work in oil on canvas or in water-based mediums: acrylic paint, inks and pencils on canvas or wood.  Sometimes I also stick or collage paper onto the canvas.  I list the specific mediums used in each piece alongside each artwork.

  • It varies. Smaller paintings on wood panel usually have a hand-painted wooden frame.  Most work on canvas is sold unframed; many people prefer this more modern look and it means it can be shipped without costing you more.
It’s often easier to decide on a frame once you have the painting with you and you can see what will suit the room it will hang in. A slimline trench or tray frame with a small ‘shadow’ gap gives a contemporary feel for a canvas - or you can go for something wider or more traditional depending on your decor.

Framing details are with each painting. Please contact me if you would like bespoke advice or have any further questions — framing can be an art in itself!

  • Yes, nearly all my paintings come ready to hang (with cord, wire or hanging straps).

If, however, we decide to ship your painting on canvas rolled in a tube, it will removed from the stretcher bars and frame, and sent direct to your framer to be restretched locally and perhaps framed to your preference.

  • I recommend using 2 screws (not just one) placed a few inches apart for a more secure hang.  Use a spirit level to check your marks on the wall are level before drilling.  Large unframed paintings that are stretched but not framed may be hung directly on to 2 level screws, with the screw head resting or slightly pressed into the stretcher frame.

  • Some pieces sell very quickly. Make sure you join my mailing list to find out about new work before it is added to the Shop. My subscribers receive first access to new work available.

  • It depends on size, but all paintings are carefully packed using bubble wrap and cardboard. Extra care is taken for the corners. Each one is wrapped to order and my studio assistant takes care to ensure it is well protected to arrive in perfect condition. For further details about delivery please see my Shipping details.

  • Commissioning an original painting involves asking me to create a specific artwork just for you rather than purchasing one that is already in existence in my online Art Shop.

By discussing your preference for size, colour palette and where your painting will hang, I can begin to connect to you, the energy of the place and the painting that will become yours.

My creative process involves intuitively connecting to your geographic location and allowing an abstract composition to evolve naturally, which means that I cannot provide a sketch or predict the final outcome in advance. This means that every commissioned painting is unique.

If you are comfortable with allowing me creative freedom along the parameters we agree, which might include ‘in the style of’ another of my paintings you like, then please get in touch to request a commission consultation.

We will discuss your vision and determine all the details of your new piece.

Commissions take 8 to 10 weeks to create, and I ask for a deposit to secure a slot on my schedule and for me to acquire supplies.

  • As the value of my artwork grows, I understand spreading the cost can be a helpful option. Please contact me to arrange. You can hold an original painting with a 50% deposit. The balance can be paid in one further payment or 2 monthly payments of 25% each.

This is not a credit scheme but an arrangement on trust at no extra cost to you. You understand that a deposit will secure your artwork and it will be marked as sold on the website so no one else can purchase it, and that you will be required to pay the remaining balance within the timeframe agreed.

The title or ownership of the painting transfers once the balance in full. As soon as you have paid in full, your painting will be shipped to you. Usual shipping costs and return policy will apply.

fine art Prints

  • A fine art print is a high quality reproduction of an original artwork, the print is so fine you can’t see the printed dots with the naked eye. All prints are signed by me on the front.

  • A high resolution scan or photograph of the original work is taken and carefully colour adjusted to ensure the optimum colour match. The editions are giclée prints made at a specialist printer using archival quality inks on a beautiful heavyweight (310 gsm) acid-free 100% cotton watercolour paper using Epsom archival light-fast pigmented inks. I am told these are lightfast for 150 years!

  • A print can be an open edition (with an unlimited amount of a particular image) or a limited edition (with a limited and defined number of a particular image). “Low end” or inexpensive prints are usually open editions like posters and photomechanical reproductions. More valuable prints are limited editions, and are, for the most part, hand signed and numbered by the artist.

I have chosen to create limited edition prints only, typically in an edition size of 250 for prints on paper, and only 7 for c-prints on aluminium. Each print is individually numbered from the edition and signed. The edition size is listed with each item.

  • Each print is sent with a Certificate of Authenticity to confirm its provenance - that it comes from my artist studio. The certificate includes an image of the print, the title and its number within the total edition size, your name and date of purchase, along with my signature.

  • No, most are available as originals only. Certain paintings which I feel would work particularly well as reproductions are selected to be available as limited edition prints.

  • If you’d like to discuss size options different to the ones listed, please email me at art@trudymontgomery.com and I will do my best to accommodate your request.

  • It’s possible that I can make a print of the painting you like. Just let me know and I will see if I can get the work scanned – or if it’s sold or and/or unavailable for another reason.

  • Because of the difficulty of shipping glass I don’t usually sell framed work. A framer will be able to mount and frame your print to your taste.

  • All prints available on my website are printed in a professional print lab on museum quality acid-free paper and using archival light-fast inks. If framed and/or otherwise protected from the elements, they will last well beyond your lifetime. However, I recommend that you avoid hanging prints (and original artwork) where they are exposed to direct sunlight or moisture. Ask your framer to use UV protective glass or museum-quality glass for optimal protection.

  • Prints are carefully wrapped in archival tissue paper and shipped rolled in a cardboard tube, along with a signed Certificate of Authenticity for your records. Larger artwork will be rolled and sent in an extra strong cardboard tube to make sure it reaches you in the best condition. For further details about delivery please see the Shipping details.
